THE MOOD

Amber Waves

Purple mountains and amber waves of grain create a mood with a warm color story and rich contrasting textures

Whether you’re designing your next fashion piece or conceptualizing your next graphic design, the Amber Waves mood offers surprising doses of color and texture. Perfect for a moody summer aesthetic, we take a look at the elements that make this mood stand out.

Amber Waves Textures Heading

Amber Waves Textures

Between grainy wheat, mirror-like oceans, cotton candy clouds, and stony mountains, this mood offers not only a variety but also contrast of textures. Because of this contrast of grassy/glassy and fluff/tough, this creates more interest and brings out the best qualities of each texture.

This palette of warm hues offers an unique combination of feminine colors. Inspired by the setting sun’s rays, pinks are the dominate force in this color story and play beautifully with the colors of field of grain, deep ochre and amber. Reminiscent of the evening sky and mountain tops, purple offers an unexpected pop to this palette.

Drawing from the varying textures for this mood, fabric choices are also richly contrasting. From heavy linen in shades of wheat, to silky-smooth pink taffeta with luminescent luster, to lighter-than-air, wispy pink chiffon, and finally to luxurious and sculptural purple velvet.

THE MOOD

Butterfly Mood Board - Tastemaker Status

BUTTERFLIES

These amazing insects have always fascinated the public with their wide array of colors, patterns, and shapes, and fashion designers are no exception. As a matter of fact, butterflies have been gracing the runway periodically for years now, from Elsa Schiaparelli’s butterfly adorned blazer and hat in 1947, to Thierry Mugler’s butterfly-winged gown in 1997, to Alexander McQueen’s butterfly infested headgear in 2008. Thanks to the coming of fashion-consumer age of millennials, who grew up with Lisa Frank’s rainbow-colored world, we are seeing a resurgence of 90’s fads which includes the butterfly and all its glory.

Runway - Butterfly Fashion

Butterfly Palette

The butterfly trend gets a update with bold shades of black and a new sophisticated-take on rainbow brights. Pale shades of pink, purple, and green can stand out on their own or tone-down with deep, grounding shades of blue and black.

Butterfly Colors

Butterfly Texture

Between beautiful colors, luminescent textures, and loose, vivid patterns, there is plenty of inspiration to be drawn from butterflies for fabrication. Try metallic brocades, watercolor-patterned chiffons, and vibrant-hued silks to get that butterfly look.

THE MOOD

Utility Mood Board - Tastemaker Status

UTILITY - Tastemaker Status

As seen on the runways of Hermes and Giambattista Valli (to name a few), the utility trend is already popping up in your local retail store. This trend has been seen on the runways though jumpers or boiler suits, the garment inspired by coal-fire boiler maintenance men as early as the late 1920’s. The utility aesthetic can also be seen through thoughtful details such as belts, buckles, and drawstrings.

PALETTE

Monochromatic neutrals are the primary color palette for the utility look, ranging from army green, khaki, to off-white. Think uniformed-professions, such as camouflage green in the military or even a throw-back to the crisp white jumpsuit of the milk-man.

TEXTURES

Fabrication relies on sturdier weights and a mix of smooth and coarse textures. To fit with the utility aesthetic, heavy cotton-twills and linens are the way to give that masculine but crisp feel.
